The School of Foreign Languages of Chengdu University of Information Technology was founded in 1978 as the Section of College English Teaching in the Department of Basic Course Teaching of Chengdu Meteorological College. It was renamed the Department of Foreign Languages of Chengdu University of Information Technology in 1999 and its English program was started in 2000. In 2015, the Department was renamed the School of Foreign Languages of Chengdu University of Information Technology and a translation program was added in 2018. The School has five sections of teaching (groups), including Section 1 of College English Teaching, Section 2 of College English Teaching, Section of Teaching for English Majors, Section of Teaching for Translation & Interpreting Majors and Group of English Teaching for graduate students. The five sections of teaching are responsible for teaching English majors and translation majors, as well as teaching common English courses for non-English majors at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

The School has 100 faculty members, including 90 full-time teachers. Among the full-time teachers, there are 4 professors, 17 associate professors and 60 lecturers; there are 6 doctors, 6 doctoral candidates and 75 masters. The School has one vice president of China Bilingual Research Association of Sinology, one president of Sichuan Applied Foreign Languages Institute, one director of the Excellent Base for Chinese and Foreign Cultural Communication of the Publicity Department of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, one expert reviewer of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Sichuan Province, one consultant of the Thailand Research Center of the National Research Center of Sichuan Province, one member of the Sichuan Provincial Teaching Guidance Committee for Foreign Languages and Literature, one director of the Sichuan Foreign Language Teaching Research Association for Colleges and Universities, one vice president of Sichuan Cognitive Linguistics Research Association and one director of Translators Association of Sichuan .

The School of Foreign Languages adheres to the guiding principles of the University, strives to meet the demand of the society, and seeks for survival and development based on teaching quality. The School boasts a strong teaching team. In recent years, four teachers won prizes in the liberal arts group of the National Multimedia Courseware Competition, one won the first prize of the National Foreign Language Micro-Lectures Competition, three won the first prize and the second prize of the Sichuan Provincial Micro-Lectures Competition, four won the first, second and third prizes of the National Foreign Language Teaching Contest in Sichuan, one won the third prize of the Tianfu Translation Award, and one won the second prize of the Sixth Foreign Language Micro-Lectures Competition in Sichuan Province,three won the first prize in the English group of Competition of Ideological and Political Education in Foreign Language Course among Sichuan Provincial Colleges, four won the title of “The Most Popular Teacher Among Students” of the University, three won the title of Advanced Individual in "Three Education", three won prizes in the Teaching Contest of Young Teachers, two won the title of Excellent Teacher of the University, four won the Teaching Prize of Young Teachers, 22 won the prizes at various levels in the University’s Multimedia Courseware Competition, and 34 won the University’s Teaching Achievements Awards at various levels.

Aiming at turning out practical multi-disciplinary English talents, the School of Foreign Languages is running the English program with the idea of “laying a solid foundation, meeting a wider range of needs, emphasizing practicality and promoting inter-disciplinary education”. We insist on small class teaching, with about 25 students in a class. The passing rates of TEM 4 and TEM 8 exceed the national averages. The passing rate of TEM 4 exceeds the national average by 20% - 30% averagely. The newly added translation program strives to cultivate translation professionals with certain background knowledge of scientific and technological English, business English and good cross-cultural communication ability in combination with the University’s advantageous disciplines. Each teacher in the English program and the translation & interpreting program has at least a master’s degrees or a professional title of an associate professor.

The School is forging ahead in scientific research in translation, literature, linguistics and teaching methods. The past five years have witnessed remarkable progress in both quantity and quality in the scientific research of the teachers. The teachers presided over 129 scientific research projects, including 40 projects at the provincial, ministerial and municipal levels. 105 papers have been published, including 6 papers included in SCI,SSCI,A&HCI,EI, 12 papers in CSSCI, and 1in “Periodical Literatures Reprinted by Renmin University of China”. 30 monographs, translations and textbooks have been published. One teacher won the title of Reserve Candidate for Academic and Technical Leaders of Sichuan Province, one teacher won the third prize of the 18th Excellent Achievement in Social Sciences of Sichuan Province, one teacher won the first prize of the Excellent Translation Achievement of the 4th Tianfu Translation Award, and one teacher won the second prize for his academic paper in the 17th National Science and Technology Translation Seminar.

Remarkable results have also been achieved in student training. In recent years, there have been 37 innovation and entrepreneurship projects for college students launched in the School of Foreign Languages, including 3 national projects and 6 provincial projects. Among the 20 projects completed, the national level projects won 2 second prizes and 1 third prize, provincial-level projects 2 third prizes, and university-level projects 2 third prizes. Under the guidance of the teachers, the students have published more than 50 academic papers, including nearly 10 papers in international journals or conferences. They have also achieved excellent results in various competitions at different levels. One student won the Best Position at the 2021 International Youth Model United Nations Video Debate Conference hosted by UNESCO Peace Center and participated by students from more than 40 countries, becoming the only student from the Chinese Mainland to have won the award. In the 2021 National Interpretation Competition, a student of our School was promoted into the Western China Final and won the second prize. In 2021, our students entered the national finals of the National College English Competition for the first time and won the third prize in the English Debate Competition and the third prize in the English Speech Competition. In the fourth “General Translation Award” National College Student Translation Competition in 2020, one student won the first prize, four won the second prize, and four won the third prize. In 2019, one student won the second prize in the “FLTRP’s Guocai Cup” National College English Speech Competition.

In the past five years, the main employers of our graduates have been educational institutions, translation institutions, private enterprises, joint ventures, government departments, etc. Some graduates work in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and other countries. Among our outstanding alumni, some have been admitted to Harvard University, University of Illinois, London School of Political Science and Economics, University of Nottingham, Sydney University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Sichuan University, Wuhan University, Chongqing University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing Foreign Studies University and other famous universities at home and abroad. There are also graduates employed by well-known enterprises and institutions such as the International Exchange Center of Peking University, Pan Asian Aviation School of the United States, Pfizer of the United States, China Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd.
