Time:2024-10-27

The School of Foreign Languages recently held two wonderful lectures during International Education Week to improve students' understanding of the language profession and broaden their international horizons.

On the evening of September 24th, 2024, Ms. Miao Yiran had an in-depth communication with the students on the theme of “The Power of Language: English majors in the Perspective of Globalization” in classroom 4108 of the Hangkonggang Campus. Ms. Miao elaborated on the importance of language majors and career prospects and stressed the key role of English students in the process of globalization. She pointed out that English, as a global language, is an important tool to connect the world and promote cross-cultural communication, and English majors need to have a global vision and cross-cultural communication skills.

On the afternoon of September 26th, in the lecture entitled "Cross-cultural Teaching: Experience as a Teaching Assistant in a Confucius Institute in the UK", Ms. An Liya shared her teaching experience in a Confucius institute. Through her personal experience, Ms. An introduced the establishment background and the development of the Confucius Institute as well as the importance of promoting cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. She talked about her work as a teaching assistant at the Confucius Institute in the UK, including classroom teaching, the organization of extra-curricular activities and interaction with international students. Ms. An stressed that cultural differences may lead to misunderstandings and communication barriers, but these can be overcome through patient communication and an open mind. She encouraged students to enhance their professional competence, actively participate in cultural activities, and become a bridge for cultural exchanges in the future.

Both lectures were warmly welcomed and highly appreciated by the students. They stated that these lectures not only gave them a deeper understanding of language-related majors and cross-cultural communication, but also stimulated their enthusiasm for spreading Chinese culture to the world. Through these events, the School of Foreign Languages not only enhanced the interaction between teachers and students, but also provided a platform for students to understand international education and cultural exchange.
